VTS Operator – ABP

Accountabilities

  • Assist in the monitoring and regulating navigation, and ensuring that the statutory regulations and guidelines are followed.
  • Provide vessels using the Humber with the necessary information, advice or direction to achieve a safe passage through the harbour.
  • Collate and disseminate information to all river-users acting as a link between the vessels and those concerned with their movements within the estuary and the ports connected with the Humber, in particular the requirements of the various Dock Masters, wharf operators and shipping agents.
  • Ensure that “River Broadcasts” are promulgated by VHF every two hours and contain information on weather, tides and any other relevant navigational information.
  • Carry out the role of first contact for Emergencies and Incidents which may lead to the activation of emergency plans.
  • Assist in the monitoring of maximum drafts for the Ouse, Trent and Havens, limits for Passage Plan Vessels and under keel clearances, LW sailings/berthings, and air drafts for the Humber Bridge.
  • To be proactive in any situation which may lead to a close quarters situation or where non-compliance with regulations, plans and procedures is observed.
  • Assist in the compiling of various records and reports appertaining to events & incidents in the VTS area.
  • When required initiate and attend the MRC Immingham.

Skills, experiences, qualifications & competencies

Essential

  • Understanding of the VTS Function.
  • Geographical knowledge of the Humber Harbour Area, an advantage.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and I.T. skills.
  • Team player.
  • Must hold a valid UK driving licence.
  • Must be willing to undertake further training as necessary.

 Ideal

  • Certificate of Competency “Officer of the Watch II/I” or V103/1.
  • Past VTS Experience.
  • Knowledge of Marine Legislation
